What is the key of a song?

The key of a song is the group of notes it is built around — a tonic note plus a scale, either major or minor. The key decides which notes and chords sound "at home" in the track and sets its overall mood: major keys tend to feel bright and uplifting, while minor keys feel darker or more emotional. Knowing a song's key is the foundation for mixing tracks together, transposing them, playing along on an instrument or writing a new part that fits.

How our song key finder works

Upload an audio file or paste a direct link and the tool analyzes the melody and harmony of your track right in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server. It measures how strongly each of the twelve pitch classes appears, then matches that profile against every major and minor key to find the most likely key and scale. Detection works best on clear, melodic recordings; percussion-only or heavily atonal audio may not contain enough pitch information.

Using the key for DJ mixing and songwriting

Once you know the key, the results also show its relative key and DJ-compatible (Camelot) keys, so you can build harmonic mixes and mashups that blend smoothly without clashing. For producers and songwriters, the seven diatonic chords of the detected key give you an instant, theory-correct palette to start chord progressions, basslines and melodies that stay in key.
